Marya

Marya
I met Marya through Jesica. Maya also lives at the Glendhu campsite, but her roots are firmly planted in Mexico. To express my appreciation for her home country, I mentioned two films that had deeply moved me: “ROMA” and “Y Tu Mamá También,” which showcase the natural charm of Mexico and its culture.
Maya is a natural beauty, always with a radiant smile. When I asked if she had something that represented Mexico, she eagerly said, “My sombrero!” She grabbed it from her car, her face lighting up with pride. Standing proudly in front of the camera, Maya’s sombrero shone as brightly as her smile. As we took photos, she shared more about herself.
This is her first time leaving Mexico, and deciding to come to New Zealand was the hardest decision she’s ever made. Unlike many backpackers who travel and work, Maya’s situation is different: as a single mother of two beautiful girls, she has always aimed to provide the best future for them. With limited job opportunities in Mexico, she took a risk, investing her savings to create a better future, hoping to return with enough to start her own business. However, upon arriving and starting work in New Zealand, she fell in love with the country and now hopes for an opportunity to live here someday with her daughters, whom she misses dearly.
Maya finds the people in Wanaka very friendly. On her first day in Wānaka, she visited the library to use a computer and print CVs. The staff were welcoming and helpful, brightening her day. Having studied English for four years as a child, her language skills have been beneficial in communicating her needs. Although she describes her English as not perfect, people make an effort to understand and assist her.
As her working holiday will eventually come to an end, Maya will have to return to Mexico. However, if she ever has the opportunity to stay in New Zealand, she would choose Wānaka as her forever home. She enjoys skiing and feels like a child again when she’s on the mountain. Walking by the lake and admiring the mountains brings her joy, too.
As we were about to finish the photoshoot, Mayra posed with the Mexican flag, her eyes filled with pride. Her love for her homeland was evident and deeply moving. Although the sombrero photo was wonderful, I decided this one would be the one for the exhibition.
As I drove home, I felt grateful to have met Mayra, a beautiful person who inspires reflection on life, purpose, and pursuing dreams.
