About
My name is Bianca de Groot.
I am currently living in the beautiful country of New Zealand.
I grew up in the French-speaking region of Belgium, though my parents are originally from the Netherlands. My academic background is in Mathematics, which I studied at university, followed by a Master’s in Econometrics. Despite this analytical background, photography has always been my true passion, and I’ve dedicated much of my time improving my skills in this field.

I began my photography journey at the age of 18 while I was exploring the streets of London as an au pair. Shortly after, a dear friend gifted me a film camera, and I started capturing the essence of cities like Rome, Paris, and Amsterdam. During my university years, I also took photography courses at the Utrecht University Cultural Centre, focusing on Portrait Photography, Composition Photography, and Documentary Photography.

In 2019, I officially became a photographer, registered my business. While working as a supervisor for the Dutch Central Bank (supervisor on insurance companies), I spent my weekends photographing weddings, mostly.
Last September, I decided to embark on an adventure in New Zealand with my van. I found myself in Wanaka, a breathtaking place where I organized photography lessons at the Wanaka Library and did a portrait photography project for the Welcoming Community.

What is your background?I have a background in Mathematics, having studied at the University of Utrecht and earned a Master's in Econometrics and Management Science from Erasmus University Rotterdam. My journey with photography began at age 18 when I joined the photography committee of my mathematics program, capturing events like musicals, concerts, and introductory days. At 20, a close friend gifted me an analog camera, and I started photographing cities like Amsterdam, Paris, and Rome - falling in love with the art of storytelling through images. I also took classes at the Cultural Centre of the University of Utrecht, Parnassos, where I focused on Composition Photography, Portrait Photography, and Documentary Photography, learning under the guidance of Marzia Cosenza. These courses deepened my understanding of photography and helped shape my approach to capturing moments. In 2019, I began shooting weddings, which allowed me to combine my love for street photography, portraits, architecture, and capturing raw, unposed moments. It was a beautiful blend of all the elements I love about photography. In 2024, I expanded my passion for photography by teaching. I taught courses on the Basics of Photography, Composition, and Colour Theory in Wanaka, New Zealand, and I’m excited to continue offering these workshops in other locations, as I enjoyed it very much.

What is your photography style?I specialize in candid photography, focusing on natural, unposed moments that tell a story. I aim to capture emotions and connections as they unfold, rather than creating staged, traditional shots. My style is documentary-driven with a fine art touch, creating timeless memories for my clients.
-
What sets you apart from other (wedding) photographers?I would describe my style as a blend of documentary photography with a touch of fine art. My roots are in analog portrait and street photography, which has influenced how I approach my work today. While I now primarily shoot digitally, my experience with film has taught me the importance of being intentional with each shot. This has helped me to focus on capturing those intimate, fleeting moments and to anticipate the perfect shot. Having a background in street photography, I’ve developed the skill of blending into the background, allowing me to photograph naturally and spontaneously. This is key in wedding photography, where my goal is to capture the genuine, unposed moments that you may miss during the day. I want you to be able to fully experience your wedding, knowing that I’m there to document those precious memories for you to relive.
-
How do you approach wedding photography? For weddings, I focus on capturing real, unfiltered moments. I make it a point to blend into the family and the flow of the day. Often, guests will ask if I’m a close friend of the couple because I seem to fit in so effortlessly. I strive to be present and engaged, but never in a way that distracts from the moment. My goal is to capture the laughter, the tears, and everything in between—those special, spontaneous moments you may miss in the excitement, but will cherish forever when you look back at the photos.
-
Do you pose people for portraits?I prefer to keep portraits natural and candid, allowing you to feel at ease in front of the camera. While I may offer gentle guidance to help with composition and lighting, I avoid rigid posing, letting the session flow and capturing authentic expressions and emotions.
-
How do you approach newborn and maternity photography? For newborn and maternity sessions, my goal is to document these precious moments as they unfold. I capture the tenderness, the small details, and the quiet moments, all while making sure you're comfortable and relaxed. I use a soft, unobtrusive style.
-
What can I expect during a photo session with you?You can expect a relaxed, comfortable experience. I’ll guide you when needed, but I’m also focused on letting things unfold naturally, so the photos reflect who you truly are. I’ll take time to make sure you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera, so you can enjoy the session and have fun!
-
How far in advance should I book my session or wedding shoot? It’s always best to book as early as possible to ensure availability, especially for weddings, which can fill up months in advance. For other sessions, I recommend booking at least a few weeks ahead to give me ample time to plan.
-
How many images will I receive after my session?I focus on quality over quantity, so you’ll receive a carefully curated selection of images that truly tell the story of your day or session. For weddings, this typically means around 300-500 images, depending on the length of the event. For other sessions, it can range from 30 to 100 images, depending on the shoot.
-
Can I print my photos or get them on digital files?Absolutely! After your session/wedding, you’ll receive access to a high-resolution gallery where you can download and print your images.
-
Are you Dutch?Yes, I am Dutch! I am also available in French, English, Italian, and German, so feel free to reach out in whichever language you prefer.
